For a variety of appliances, we use molar bands. These are metal rings that are placed around the back teeth. Usually the teeth sit snugly adjacent to each other, making it difficult to place the molar band around the tooth. This is why separators are used.

Separators are little elastic rings which slip easily between the teeth. The separators will encourage the teeth to move apart slightly, creating a tiny space which enables the band to be placed easily around the tooth the following week.

The separators can feel tight at first, and a little bit annoying (it’s bit like having a piece of food stuck between your teeth). Within a few hours or so everything will feel back to normal.

This appointment for the placement of separators is VERY quick and easy and is often made on the same day as your consultation appointment.
